The pen IS mightier than the needle...or at least it is during this class! Students use fabric pens and a light table to trace images onto fabric using only dots. Start with a clear photocopied image and end up with a custom piece of fabric suitable for an art quilt.
For this quilt, I started with a photograph, made a good quality photocopy, and then stipple-traced through fabric on a light table. In the class, students learn the tips and tricks necessary to keep your work from looking like a coloring book picture. We talk about pen sizes, fabric quality, value, and technique.
Toolbox Class at the Quilt Patch I recently taught the Pen is Mightier Than the Needle at the Quilt Patch in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of my Toolbox Series. These pictures were taken at those classes.
Wondering how to use your finished stippled piece? Here's what one student did with hers. Kate Kane took my class at the Quilt Patch and then used her new skills to create the center panel of this lovely wall quilt. The giraffe is based on original artwork by Patrice Markway Holt. Way to go, Kate!
